Pain in the jaw can be excruciating and debilitating. The jaw joint or tempero-mandibular joint (TMJ) is a very complex structure. The joint moves in a variety of ways and like all joints may become dysfunctional. Symptoms of TMJ disorder or dysfunction, include general pain, inability to open or close the jaw (known as locking jaw), clicking of the joint and even arthritis. The stability of the TMJ is affected by factors such as stress and the position of the teeth when the jaws are closed (occlusion).
At Aquae Sulis Dental we are experienced in treating the effects of TMJ disorder. Once correct diagnosis is made, treatment involves dietary advice, jaw exercises and splint therapy to help reposition and protect the jaws. Most often the latter is by the use of a splint that is worn over the teeth at night.
A significant cause of TMJ disorder is the loss of back teeth. Loss of occlusion allows the jaws to over-close and strain the TMJ. In addition, the remaining teeth take a much greater strain, with detrimental consequences. Re-establishment of a complete and balanced occlusion is thus very important to achieve oral heath. Occlusal rehabilitation involves the disciplines of both restorative and implant dentistry. It may be a very involved and lengthy process, thus prevention of tooth loss is highly desirable.
