Hypnotherapy is a very tried and tested adjunct to dentistry. From extreme dental phobics to helping to achieve greater relaxation during long procedures hpnosis has been used for many years;

At some point in our lives we will all be struck by a feeling of fear or anxiety, but what happens when this prevents you from being able to do something that is important. May people have a fear of the dentist, some people have it from a bad experience, other can’t place there finger on the reason they fear it so much. Sometimes this fear can prevent us visiting the dentist for many years, which in some cases can have serious implications on their oral health.

Hypnotherapy is fast becoming an affective alternative treatment for anxiety and phobias. There are usually two types of treatments offered by hypnotherapist. The first is regression therapy which is used to alter the individuals perception of the past and release the emotion that is associated with that event. The second looks to change the way they think which intern will change their behaviour towards it.

The Hypnotherapy Directory is a resource network, which aims to support those seeking a suitable hypnotherapist in their local area. To ensure the professionalism of the Hypnotherapist on the site each member has submitted a copy of their qualifications and insurance or is a member of a recognised professional body.

Collagen suppliments really could change your life

A friend of mine is involved with bringing this exciting nutritional suppliment to the UK. I am normally very careful about endorsing such products but I have looked in detail at the scientific data behind this product and I am very impressed. Having played a lot of sport throughout my life including high impact pursuits such as rugby, skiing, running and tennis I am all to aware of the ravages that age and injuries can have on the body. So any product that can help this and also prevent the long term use of products such as the non steroidal anti-inflammatory agents e.g. Ibuprofen is worth investigating. I already take nutitional suppliments and immunity boosting capsules from the Dental Vital range I am keen to try these capsules. Here then is some information about this exciting product:

Collagen…. The Facts

The role of collagen in the body

Collagen is the most common protein found in the body and accounts for one third of the total body protein making up 6 % of our total body weight (remember 70 % of our body’s weight is water). Studies show that we loose our body’s store of collagen every year. The results of this are dramatic!

Each collagen molecule resembles a microscopic rope that is extremely strong and flexible. Collagen forms a key part of the extracellular matrix of connective tissue and is found in a huge array of tissues including; hair, nails, skin (type I collagen), bones, cartilage, tendons and ligaments (normally type II collagen) There are 14 different types of collagen found within the body, ten of which are major and a majority being type I and II The extracellular matrix gives connective tissue, most of their functional characteristics Le. the ability of bones and cartilage to bear weight. Thus, when collagen is lost the functional characteristics of the tissue are lost e.g. skin looses elasticity leading to wrinkles. Damage to connective tissue and loss of collagen occurs as a result of a number of causes including; the environment (including the sun and pollution) and the natural ageing process.

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body (approximately 76 percent of the total protein of the body) Collagen forms a key component of the skin, hair and nails. Collagen makes up 90 % of skin (type I collagen) – the largest organ in the body which is significantly affected by the aging process. It appears that women loose collagen at a faster rate than men during ageing, a process that is accelerated during and following menopause.

A variety of symptoms are increased post-menopause these include epidermal thinning, declining dermal collagen content, dryness, decreased elasticity.

proto-col is a British range which has taken the UK by storm. Not only this but proto-col is now sold successfully across the globe in countries as far a field as Japan and the USA to Cyprus and Dubai.

proto-col collagen capsules are now available through numerous retailers country wide. Special offers may apply.

A jar of proto-col collagen contains 90 capsules each with 400mg of pharmaceutical grade type I and type II collagen hydrolysate.

Professor Greg Whyte PhD FACSM is advisor to the British Olympic team and one of the UK’s leading sports physiologists. His outstanding reputation commands the respect of many high profile followers, including celebrities and professional athletes. Professor Whyte performs ongoing research on the benefits of collagen supplementation.

proto-col 100 % collagen capsules are clinically proven to effectively reduce health risks including arthritis, osteoporosis, skin sagging, crows feet and poor nail and hair quality

proto-col are proud to have supported celebrities Chris Moyles, Fearne Cotton, Denise Van Outen, Ben Shephard, Kimberly Walsh, Ronan Keating and Gary Barlow in the recent trip up Mount Kilimanjaro for Comic Relief. The celebs were prescribed proto-col 100 % collagen supplements by Professor Whyte to support their joints and ligaments on their formidable ascent up the mount, and provide protection against biting winds of -15C.

Steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are often used to ease the swelling and joint pain which afflicts sufferers of osteoarthritis. However, this treatment has a number of disadvantages, including the concern that they may be toxic to cartilage. Because of this a number of non-drug alternatives have been suggested, including a high grade of collagen, such as proto-col collagen supplementation.

Professor Whyte adds. “As a nutritional supplement, proto-col capsules have shown promising results in providing pain relief for arthritis and osteoporosis.”

proto-col collagen is available in both our naturally advanced skincare and our naturally advanced nutrition ranges.

Both ranges contain the same high quality pure collagen capsules.

Areas which collagen could help you.

·Eyesight

·Hair

·Skin diseases

·Skin tone

·Connective tissue

·Blood circulation

·Diabetes

·Rosacea

·Arthritis

·Pain

·Stretch marks

·Cellulite

Taking proto-col collagen can stimulate the bodies own production of collagen.

By the time your 40 you’ve lost over 20 % of your natural collagen store.

Collagen is the primary structural protein in the body.

proto-col collagen is a unique triple matrix which allows the body to recognise the protein molecule.

Absorption of proto-col collagen is very fast due to the collagen being 100 % pure and of pharmaceutical grade.

Collagen has been proven to help re-build cartilage and support joint health.

Loss of collagen causes formation of lines and wrinkles and can lead to arthritis and joint pain.

proto-col collagen is a unique formulation of type I and type II collagen, it benefits both hair, skin, nails and joints.

The level of collagen available in a proto-col capsule cannot be derived from your normal food.

Collagen is nature’s own incredible ingredient for supple skin, strong nails, shiny hair and healthy joints so who wouldn’t want to top up their existing supply?

Boosting your body’s natural levels of collagen can contribute to maintaining a youthful appearance by plumping fine lines, improving the strength and texture of nails and enhancing the quality of hair along with the added internal benefits of reinforcing healthy joints.

“I take proto-col 100% collagen capsules - what you put on your face you should take on the inside too.”

Trinny Woodall (Heat magazine)

“Being a glamour puss is hard work!” “I used to use Helena Rubenstein and then someone put me onto proto-col and I’m hooked! It’s Brilliant”

Carol Vorderman (Health plus)

“To keep her skin as firm as her teenage Hollywood rivals, Lucy takes collagen capsules daily as a natural alternative to going under the knife”

Lucy Lui (Marie Claire)

“I have been using proto-col for the last 12 months after suffering from tendonitis. I was surprised and amazed by how fast my recovery was; I was back competing four weeks earlier than anticipated”

Ben McLean (Team GB)

“I love the pro to-col pure collagen skin supplement; it makes my nails so hard they withstand climbing the wall, hang tough and even the toughest contenders! It’s great for hair and skin condition too.”

Clinical coaching course a great success

Aquae Sulis Dental in conjunction with Astra Tech Dental has just run the first clinical coaching course. Spread over three modules and held at the practice, this proved to be a very successful course. Aimed at the general dental practitionner who wishes to increase their knowledge of dental implants, the course took them through all aspects of dental implants, from the selection criteria, the surgical procedures and finally to the great range of restorative options available. The main aims were to make sure that each participant had the confidence to talk in detail to their patients about all aspects of implants and then; to be able to restore the implants placed by the implantologist. A group of five dentists made up the first course and from the feedback they had a lot of fun and gained an extensive knowledge of implants, in a state of the art practice. From my point of view, teacing the course was very enjoyable, a real pleasure and priviledge to work with such enthusiastic dentists. I look forwards to running similar courses in the future and to instigating the Aquae Sulis Dental Study Club.

A recent smile report from Oral-B which studied 2000 participants across the UK, found that whilst it is no surprise that we make judgements basesd on our initial impressions, it is a person’s smile and teeth that prompt us to an intuitive view of their lifestyle.

The report concluded that;

Bad teeth can age a person by 13 years

82% think that you can earn more if you have great teeth

Men rank a gorgeous smile over a great figure

40% of men think that women with unhealthy looking teeth must be single

The report agrees with work done by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry that concluded that cosmetic dentistry has a tremendous benefit to giving our patients to smile with confidence. First impressions really do matter as it is obvious how much we all assume about a person from just looking at their teeth and smile.

Recently, several of my patients have asked me who can carry out tooth whitening. This was prompted by a recent series of advertisements in the Bath media, where a nutritionist has started to offer tooth whitening. The answer is that only dentally qualified personnel can carry out this dental procedure and it is illegal for anyone else to do so. The General Dental Council (GDC), who maintain the standards of dentistry in the UK to protect the public, have clearly stated that tooth whitening is a dental procedure and as such under the Dentists Act, can only be carried out by suitably qualified people. Go to http://www.gdc-uk.org/General+public/Tooth+Whitening/ for more information.

The main concern is that on rare occasions, tooth whitening can cause damage to the the teeth and gums. Non-dentists just do not have the ability or experience to diagnose problems that may be excerbated by the whitening procedure. After all it takes five years of dental school to train to practice dentistry. Tooth whitening is a cosmetic procedure, however it is also a dental one. I would encourage anyone who is considering whitening their teeth to consult their own dentist. Too many horror stories come out of people seeking procedures by unqualified operators where there is little or no come-back if something goes wrong. It is a question of trust. Who is better able to provide the best care; a dentist or someone who thinks the tooth whitening might make a nice profitable sideline?

A FREE introduction to dental implants

On Tuesday 17 November we held the first in a series of initiatives to involve GDPs with Implantology. 32 dentists from Bath and surrounding areas visited the elegant Royal Crescent Hotel for our free seminar ‘An introduction to dental implants.’

The evening, supported by Astra Tech Dental, was an opportunity to find out more about the latest developments in the world of implantology, and to meet Dr Ian Bellamy from Aquae Sulis Dental. Ian presented the different ways in which GDPs can become involved with dental implants, for example:

referring patients to an experienced implantologist who will perform both the surgical and restorative treatment for their patients

Working closely with the implantologist and their own laboratory, to restore the implants themselves

Those already experienced in restoring implants may wish to progress to placing implants themselves. This involves considerable training which is greatly helped by working with a mentor who is available to help with all aspects from treatment planning to the surgical procedure.

Ian shared a wide variety of case studies, including cases which were suitable for implants, as well as scenarios in which implants are not appropriate. He demonstrated how implantology can help build a general dental practice and continue to offer excellent service to patients, and delegates also heard from one of his current referring dentists, David Morley, with whom Ian has built a successful and mutually beneficial relationship.

In the course evaluation questionnaire, dentists were offered the opportunity to register their interest in the new Clinical Coaching Course which will be running from April, as well as joining the Aquae Sulis Dental Study Club where they can meet up to share cases. 15 have already registered interest in the Study Club with similar numbers wanting to join the Study Club. 23 said they were confident to start referring patients to Ian straight away.

The evening was considered to be a great success with 27 of the 32 delegates rating the overall event as excellent and the others classing it as very good. They were also able to comply with the latest GDC guidelines for maintaining their professional knowledge and competence and gain 1.5 hours of CPD.

If you missed the event, but are interested in becoming involved with implants, please call Ian on 01225 339767 or email him at ian@aquaesulisdental.co.uk

For patients who have not attended Aquae Sulis Dental before but wish to get more information about either dental implants or cosmetic dentistry, we offer a free initial consultation. You will be able to view the practice and meet the dentist, who can discuss with you what dentistry today has to offer. A full dental examination will NOT be carried out.
