Dental Implants... step by step
- A thorough assessment is made. This involves a detailed examination including dental X-rays or, increasingly, a 3D CT scan that allows a three dimensional image of the bone and surrounding teeth to be viewed in great detail. In addition photographs and dental models may be taken.
- A comprehensive treatment plan is formed which we discuss in detail with the patient.
- We carry out any preliminary treatment which may be necessary to eliminate other disease from the mouth.
- The implants are placed using gentle surgical techniques. This is most often done under local anaesthesia but IV sedation may be used.
- Once placed the implants are left to heal over a period of between six weeks and six months, in which time the bone fuses to the implant.
- Once integrated, impressions of the jaws are taken and the restorations made. These are then fitted in the mouth either by cementing in place or by dental implant screws.
- With all restorative work complete, the patient is placed on a maintenance programme where the implants can be properly looked after and monitored.
