Dental Implants... step by step

  1. A thorough assessment is made. This involves a detailed examination including dental X-rays or, increasingly, a 3D CT scan that allows a three dimensional image of the bone and surrounding teeth to be viewed in great detail. In addition photographs and dental models may be taken.
  2. A comprehensive treatment plan is formed which we discuss in detail with the patient.
  3. We carry out any preliminary treatment which may be necessary to eliminate other disease from the mouth.
  4. The implants are placed using gentle surgical techniques. This is most often done under local anaesthesia but IV sedation may be used.
  5. Once placed the implants are left to heal over a period of between six weeks and six months, in which time the bone fuses to the implant.
  6. Once integrated, impressions of the jaws are taken and the restorations made. These are then fitted in the mouth either by cementing in place or by dental implant screws.
  7. With all restorative work complete, the patient is placed on a maintenance programme where the implants can be properly looked after and monitored.
