Gum Disease
As many people now realise, the leading cause of tooth loss in adults worldwide is not tooth decay, but gum disease. Also known as periodontal disease, its treatment and control is the single most important factor underpinning all aspects of dentistry.
Periodontal disease is caused by excessive build-up of bacteria in the mouth. This bacteria and its by-products are called plaque. If left in the mouth too long, plaque can harden into a scale called calculus or tartar. Gum disease can be incredibly painful and if allowed to progress it can cause destruction of the underlying bone, recession of the gums and ultimately the loss of the tooth.
Treatment and prevention
At Aquae Sulis our dentists and hygienists work together closely to stop and even reverse the effects of gum disease. Treatment involves the thorough removal of plaque and sometimes the use of topical antibiotics. In some circumstances surgical intervention is necessary.
When it comes to gum disease, the old adage of ‘prevention is better than cure’ never held truer. Good dental hygiene is the most effective way to combat and prevent gum disease. This is why we encourage our patients to keep up a regular maintenance programme both at home and in conjunction with our dental hygienist here in Bath.
