The jaw joint or tempero-mandibular joint (TMJ) is a very complex structure, moving in a variety of ways and, like all joints, prone to becoming dysfunctional. Our lead clinician, Ian Bellamy, has studied the condition in detail and has succesfully treated this very distressing condition for many patients over the years.
TMJ disorder – some common symptoms
- General discomfort
- Inability to open or close the jaw
- Clicking of the jaw joint
- Arthritic pain
Possible causes
- Jaw instability due to stress
- Tooth position when the mouth is closed (occlusion)
- Strain caused by previous loss of back teeth
Once correct diagnosis is made, treatment involves dietary advice, jaw exercises and splint therapy to help reposition and protect the jaws. Most often the latter is by the use of a splint that is worn over the teeth at night.
Re-establishment of a complete and balanced occlusion, particularly following the loss of back teeth, is key to resolving difficulties caused by TMJ disorder.
